Rip Detection for Fabric, PVC and Steel Cord Belts

The Belt Guard BG5k is a longitudinal rip detector for fabric, PVC and steel cord conveyor belting. Two ultrasonic probes are mounted at the belt edges and read their position continuously; the system derives belt width from the two readings while the conveyor runs. When a rip opens or folds the belt and width moves outside the operator-set OK Window for longer than the Fail Delay, a voltage-free relay signals the site SCADA to stop the conveyor. BG5k does not prevent a rip — it limits how far one propagates. Nothing touches the belt and nothing is embedded in it, so it retrofits to existing conveyor structures.

How BG5k Works

Measure Both Belt Edges

A non-contact ultrasonic probe is positioned at each edge of the conveyor belt.

Each probe continuously measures the position of its respective belt edge.

Calculate Width & Tracking

Using the two edge measurements, the BG5k continuously calculates:

  • belt width
  • lateral belt position / tracking

Detect a Rip-Induced Width Change

When a longitudinal rip causes the belt to widen, narrow, fold or otherwise produce a measurable change in belt width, the BG5k detects the deviation and initiates the configured response.

Warn or Stop

The BG5k compares measured width against configured limits. If the deviation exceeds the allowed threshold for the required duration, the system can issue:

  • warning signals
  • alarm outputs
  • conveyor halt / shutdown signals to the site PLC

Frequently Asked Questions

What belt types does BG5k work with?
Fabric, PVC and steel cord belting. It is not belt manufacturer dependent.
How does it detect a rip?
Two ultrasonic probes read the position of each belt edge continuously and the system derives belt width from them. If width moves outside the OK Window for longer than the Fail Delay, the HALT relay is energised. Detection therefore depends on the rip producing a measurable width change.
Does it also monitor tracking?
Yes. Belt tracking is monitored in millimetres in real time from the same edge measurements.
What happens if a sensor gets covered in material?
The Head Blocked Alarm detects an obstructed probe. The device reports itself unhealthy and drops the HEALTHY relay rather than reading the obstruction as a width change. Probes are self-cleaning while powered; otherwise an alcohol wipe on the probe face restores it.
Can it be retrofitted?
Yes. BG5k mounts to existing conveyor structures.
Does it work on any belt speed and width?
Belt speed is not a constraint. On belt width, the Operator's Manual states no limit while the Technical Bulletin gives 600–3,000 mm.
Will it detect cord damage or splice deterioration?
No. That is condition monitoring — see Belt Scanner MF for steel cord belts.
Will a rip always be detected?
No. The device requires a change in belt width, wider or narrower, following a rip. Beltscan's own manual records that this width-change effect has not been seen on every occasion of ripping, particularly on thicker, laterally stiff steel cord belting. Where no sufficient width change occurs, the conveyor is not stopped.
How fast does it respond?
The Fail Delay is adjustable from 1 to 300 seconds. A longer delay means a longer rip but fewer false trips; the right setting depends on how much normal width variation your belt shows.
What software is supplied?
Belt Guard Boss – Client, for Windows. It connects over the site network or directly by Ethernet cable, and handles configuration, live status, and download of the data and event logs. Parameter changes are password protected.
Can several units be used on one conveyor?
Yes. Rips can start away from load points — in drive houses, at take-ups and on horizontal curves. Placing units at several points limits how far a rip can propagate before one of them sees the width change.
